It's that time of year again, critters. Old favorites and war horses return, and new offerings are flung howler monkey-like onto the nearest wall in hopes that something might stick.

The fall season kicks off in earnest this week, and with so many options, a little planning is in order. Therese at Tubular has once again prepared a comprehensive guide to help chart the way.

Last year I was most excited for V and Flash Forward.  Sadly, Flash Forward turned out to be a flash in the pan (see what I did there)?  V let me down when it came to the lizard baby, but I'll be back for Juliet and the inspired casting choice for Anna's mother.  Nostalgia bait - you're doing it right.  I lost track of Fringe early in Season 1, but T tells me it's the best sci-fi show on TV, so I'm going to give it a go and see if I can keep up.  I might revisit Life Unexpected if I think about it.  I enjoyed the pilot, but I quickly grew weary of Baze and Cate.  I am looking forward to the big CW cross over event though.

It looks like Monday is going to be my night for new shows.  I've heard good things about Lone Star, and it features my tee-vee girlfriend, the delightful Adrianne Palicki.  It's going head-to-head with The Event, which will either be this year's Lost ... or Flash Forward.  I'm thinking the former in real time, and the latter I'll watch online.  Naturally the trifecta of Oahu, Boomer, and the Mayor of Waikiki, Daniel Dae Kim, will have me watching the Hawaii 5-0 reboot.

Of course I am already delighted with The Vampire Diaries' second season, and am giddy with anticipation for Supernatural's return.

And as Boone as my witness, I will get TVD Season 1 recapped and caught up.

Comic-Con 2010 - #Supernatural panel

Have you ever wondered how Tatooine must feel, what with the two suns and all? Yeah, I imagine its something like this.

Don't really know how the planet feels about the cow though ...

The Smallville panel preceded Show,  and was actually really enjoyable, made even more so when a surprise guest came out on stage and took a place at the table.  Ladies and gentleman ...

I have mad love for Bo Duke, and he was a delightful and funny addition to an already energized room.  The absolute highlight though was when he propped his drivers license up in front of him as an impromtu name tent.  The camera zoomed in on it, and he made a comment about "that's my super hero hair cut."

Executive producer Brian Peterson replied, "that's your address."  John quickly returned his license to his wallet, and said, "well, I guess I'll see you all for dinner."

Why yes, I am a national treasure, thank you for asking.

Comic-Con 2010 - Friday report

It's a trip I've wanted to make for years, and now I'm here. Wow. To say that I was overwhelmed yesterday was an understatement. This place is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly hugely mindbogglingly big it is. And the convention center looks like a frakking battlestar that broke atmo and crashed next to the bay.

I knew it was going to be a good day when I was picked up for the ride to the airport in cab #42. When I had a conversation about Dune with my San Diego shuttle driver, I knew I was home.

Now granted, while I love the concept, I don't think I'll fully embrace it until the weather cools down a bit. It's July in D.C.  You're liable to burst into flame just stepping out the front door.

#Supernatural: The characters are the lifeblood

I am mecha excited by the news (extensively covered by @SuperWiki) that Supernatural is getting the anime treatment.

MADHOUSE will produce 22 episodes set during Seasons 1 and 2, and due for release in January 2011.  It will be a combination of canon and stories written specifically for the anime series.

I kind of love the entire concept, and I'm heartened by the fact that directors Miya Shigeyuki and Ishizuka Atsuko come across as total fanboys in a recent interview on the anime site.  Best of all, they really seem to "get" what the show is all about.

What are the highlights the Directors would impress upon?

Miya: "That's a difficult one. Like the original series that has everything, please enjoy the world of Supernatural. We're going to have fun with it too (laughs)"

Ishizuka: "Whatever the case, the characters are the lifeblood! Please enjoy watching Sam and Dean!"

... because how could I possibly be expected to choose just one of etsy seller Janine Basil's delicious creations?  io9 featured her comics inspired embroidered headbands several weeks ago, but her fascinators and hats are equally fun, flirty, and fantastic.

This Lynda Carter-era Wonder Woman headband may be my favorite, and would be ideal for my first foray to Comic Con.

I'm also in love with these orange bubbles.

It would almost be worth getting married again so I could wear this as my something blue.  Almost.

And I mean, come on!  Who doesn't need a glittery purple mini burlesque crown?

Happy 4th of July!  Hope your day is a little slice of heaven.

As if there was any question that the U.S. is still the fattest greatest nation on Earth, BEHOLD!

The Cheerwine flavored Krispy Kreme donut.

I know, right??

For gentle readers sadly not in the know, Cheerwine is a lightly cherry flavored soda that my brother has described as "God's own sweat."

The donuts are on offer only for the month of July, and available only in North and South Carolina.  The two companies cited their close historic ties with the states in deciding to limit the run - although frankly I don't see why they couldn't have thrown a little love southeastern Virginia's way.

I anticipate a hot interstate trade in bootleg pastries springing up.

Reporters from the Salisbury Post got an advance box on Wednesday, and initial reactions were positive.  My favorite is this opinion from man on the street Jesse Davis:

Davis was asked to rate the doughnut on a scale of one to 10, asked where the doughnut fell.

Happy Picard Day - Engage!

I've never been a huge Trek fan, but I think we can all agree on the general awesomeness that is Patrick Stewart and John-Luc Picard.

Captain Picard Day is celebrated on June 16th because it is the equivalent date to Stardate 47457.1, mentioned in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode entitled The Pegasus. In that episode, Captain Picard Day is an occasion for the Enterprise to host schoolchildren and show them what Starfleet is like.

Celebrate accordingly - it's for the children.

Schrodinger's #LOST: The final chat

So, whatdya think of the finale?  The last 10 minutes felt a little Battlestar to me, but overall I was very satisfied, because it was all about the characters' journeys.  That's always been the heart of the show.  The mysteries and the time travel and the polar bears - those were just devices to tell an amazing, complex, emotional story about connection and community.

Come celebrate all of those things in the very last LOST chat over at Tubular.  1:00 pm Eastern time.   So much of the fun of LOST has been discussing and rehashing and obsessing, and I've done most of that with my fellow commenters at Tubular.  I'm going to miss my community like crazy, but I'll meet you all later at the church.

There are lots of ways LOST could have ended.  Would anyone have been any happier if Darlton had taken my brother's suggestions?

• Lost finale prediction...Sawyer flies away on a helicopter and sees jack has spelled "goodbye" in rocks on the ground.
• Lost finale prediction #2: Patrick Duffy walks out of the light tunnel wearing a towel and drying his hair.
• I think it's pretty obvious that Jack is going to win the million bucks at the end.  No way any of the other survivors would vote for Locke.  He's a dick.
• Lost finale prediction #3: Desmond wakes up and Suzanne Pleshette is next to him in the pool.
• Lost finale prediction #4: Locke makes it to the boat but runs it aground on the no brains atoll.
• Lost finale prediction #5: Sawyer and Juliet make out in the Ewok village while badly CGI-ed ghosts of Jack, Locke and Yoda look on approvingly.

This time tomorrow - barring any electromagnetic events - I will be happily ensconced in the warm embrace of my LOST fandom.

In Houston.

I don't live in Houston.  I don't live anywhere remotely near Houston.  "But wax|wendy", you're no doubt thinking, "that's a really long way to go for a TV show, even one as awesome as LOST."  You're not wrong, but that's where my peeps are.  And they are worth the trip.

Or as our faithful leader T put it:

Is it silly to have cared this much about a television show? Probably. But it was never just about the show, as special as it was. It was about finding a group of like-minded people with whom it was a joy to share this experience that was Lost. We're not just losing a remarkable television show, we're losing a community. A nation-wide, internet-based community of fans who have become friends, bonded by this program.
