As a general rule, librarians are a kick in the pants socially, often full of good humor, progressive, and naturally, well read. They tend to be generalists who know so much about so many things that they are quite the opposite of the boring old poops they have been made out to be. Most of them are full of life, some even full of the devil.-- Bill Hall, editorial page editor, Lewiston (Idaho) Tribune, Sept. 9, 2001.

On the road: Houston
I was in Houston over the weekend for the annual crawfish boil held at the towering glass and steel monument to tee-vee that is Tubular world headquarters. But first, there was nerd business to attend to ...
Comicpalooza!
I was hanging out with BabySteps Nicki, spreading the 29-95 gospel.
No, not the high caliber gun show.

We were right next to the 501st booth - SQUEE!! We could not have had a better position. Well, maybe if we were over by the "celebrity" area. Fair play to Nicholas Brendon for making the show, given the recent unpleasantness. Dude was looking good. Hot. Season 3 Xander hot. I do not actually have evidence to present in support of his hotness, because I was not willing to pony up the $25 necessary for a photo op.
Friday was sparsely attended, but there were a few people who costumed up for the event. Here we have a Ghostbuster, a Jedi, Boba Fett, and Ash from Evil Dead 2. So we were pretty well covered in the event of a Dark Side, zombie, or ghost outbreak.
From there it was on to the main event. Bring on the mud bugs!!!

Honey, if we can't kill people, what's the point in being a vampire?
EDWARD? Hmm?
Gods, where is Buffy when we need her?
Winchesters? Anybody?
Keep your mitts off Boone though. Takes note, Cullens. Have some fun already. You're vampires.
Although it is acceptable to go to the pier, but only if you're on a dinner and/or recruiting run.
Modesty and the fact that my mother may be reading this preclude me from adding any The Hunger clips, but come on. Blood, sex, howler monkeys, Bauhaus, and David Bowie? Vampires were just cooler in the 80's.

And I may be Team Jacob, but don't think you're getting a pass either, dogboy. This is how you do werewolf.

Seriously, you need to get out more. And I'm not talking about waiting for a summer storm to blow through so you can play baseball. Or sparkle.Although it is acceptable to go to the pier, but only if you're on a dinner and/or recruiting run.

No, we can't let it go. We're browncoats.
Well played, Castle. Mission accomplished. I might just have to start watching you.
I'm not going to lie. There may have been some squeeing during the first 30 seconds. The man is strapping on the holsters. I'm not made of stone.

UPDATE! According to the Captain himself, there's another piece of meta hiding in this scene:
@NathanFillion Look closely, when Mal comes out the door- under the gun, under the boat, just to the right. It's a nothin' part, till ya need one.
And for those of you in the not-Hulu enabled world. No one should be deprived of Nathan Fillion getting his Mal Reynolds on.
SWEET MOTHER OF GOD HE'S WEARING A LEATHER KILT!!!

Passings: John Hughes
UPDATED AGAIN!: NPR has a brief interview with Alison, talking about her relationship with John Hughes.
UPDATE: You need to read this tribute to John Hughes RIGHT NOW. For two years, 1985 - 1987, he and Alison Byrne Fields were pen pals. Her story reads like something out of one of his movies, only so much better.

Prolific as a writer and producer, he directed his last film in 1991. But he ruled the 80's. He defined that decade's (okay, my) teenage experience in a way that was funny, smart, and thoughtful. I'd go so far as to say that Buffy Summers and Veronica Mars wouldn't have been possible without him.
Somewhere in heaven the angels are saying, "Hey sexy girrrrrlfriend!"
Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
Andi totes should have been with Duckie. I never quite understood why she was the outcast. I would have killed for her clothes. The prom dress not so much, but still. Also, I had her hair. I gave myself the home perm.
Does Barry Manilow know you raid his closet?
My best friend Becca and I were obsessed with this movie. I think I still have the soundtrack on cassette somewhere ...
And he actually ended up with the right girl!
But the ultimate, ZOMG, is 16 Candles. Not only is it chock full of classic lines and moments, but it's like, about my life.
Although sadly, I did not end up with the hot senior I was in lurve with when I was a sophomore.

Vampires don't sparkle. Ever.
Save us Buffy. Save us from sparkly emo vampires that waste their immortality with high school and watch us while we sleep.

io9 Triviagasm: 10 Greatest Science Fiction TV Show Endings Ever
I found the BSG finale totally satisfying - I don't even mind the "angels among us" twist.
And speaking of Angel, I would add this to the list. Gunn totally survives, irregardless of what Ilyria says.

Dressing gown, she knows nothing about fashion.
I have a fabulous hand-made (by my great-aunt Virginia) purple faux fur coat that I have described as looking like someone skinned a muppet. An expression I totes stole from TWoP, by the way.
But in the case of designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, I think he's being over literal.

Do you know that girl? No, I really don't.
Hey! A tussle.

Tell me again how Jayne got beat up by a 90 pound girl.
And this? This is fantastic because it's true. The first time I saw a trailer for Serenity I thought to myself, "When did River turn into Buffy?"

Please Fox, pleasepleasepleaseplease don't kill this show

Fox has a history of killing my shows (Firefly, Arrested Development, Wonderfalls). And they have a history of jacking with Joss Whedon. And the buzz on this show has been ... troubling ... to say the least.
So please, Fox. Please. Think of me. Think of the children. And give Dollhouse a chance to find its legs. Because based just on this little teaser, originally posted by Michael Ausiello at EW, I really want this show to last more than 3 episodes. I want to know what happens next.
And having Helo on my teevee twice weekly isn't such a bad thing either.

Wee Little Puppet Men
Catherine Hardwicke is apparently out as director of the next installment of Twilight, reportedly for being "difficult" and "irrational". I thought that was the only flavor big time directors came in.
Anyhoodle, based on this clip from io9, may I suggest SpookyDan as her replacement?
You're pretty great Puppet!Edward, but it's still Angel for the win.
And just because it makes me giggle:
Evil's still afoot! And I'm almost out of that Nancy-boy hair-gel that I like so much. Quickly, to the Angelmobile. Away!

You wait 'till mom finds out, buddy!
You might have heard there's a new vampire movie out? But maybe not, unless you're a subtitle reading cineaste, because its been flying under the radar.

Vampires sparkle in the sun? Bored now.
Jezebel would like to offer their list of 7 Vampires Better than Twilight's Edward Cullen.

Could Twilight's Success Pave the Way for a New Buffy Movie?
You know, as much as I adore Buffy, I'm going to have to say NO on this one. Don't get me wrong, if it happened I would totes be in line opening day. But I'd rather not be disappointed.
I'll save that for when Fox cancels Dollhouse after 3 episodes.
