I review it : Star Trek
And I'm not even a Trekker. Reboot / reimagining / remake ... call it what you will but this thing lives up to all the hype. JJ Abrams has created a film that turns what we know about the characters on its head while still hitting all the nostalgia sweet spots. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and the actors all seem to really be enjoying themselves in their roles. That sense of freewheeling fun (Batman, I'm looking at YOU) totally carries through to the audience.
Also, Tortiegirl would like everyone to know that Karl Urban is in the movie. She was unaware. There may have been squealing.
Oh, JJ. Always with the polar bears. Among other things ... you'll know what I'm talking about.
5 tribbles out of 5.
There was only one pair of Vulcan ears that we could see - but that's Georgetown. The Uptown is inexplicably not showing Star Trek. If so, it would have looked like a regular convention up in there. And speaking of conventions ... this just never gets old.

Supernatural 4.21 "When the Levee Breaks"
Supernatural goes Trainspotting in the penultimate episode of the season. It's shite being a hunter!!
Robert Singer directed the episode written by Sera Gamble.
Supernatural airs Thursday at 9:00 EDT on the CW.
Dean and Bobby lock Sam in Bobby’s [awesome] panic room so he can detox from the demon blood. However, as Bobby sees more seals are being broken he tells Dean they should let Sam out to help them fight the impending apocalypse. Dean disagrees and goes to Castiel for help.Yeah. Understatement, thy name is the CW.
Sam and Dean have a big blowout confrontation.
Robert Singer directed the episode written by Sera Gamble.
Pray for Bobby. Seriously. It's been a while since Sera Gamble killed off any beloved characters. She's probably going through withdrawal herself.
Buyer beware for the following promos - the first one aired at the end of "The Rapture", but both could be considered spoilery ...
Mo Ryan at the Watcher also has deets on the final two episodes of the season, as well as an interview with the always delightful Jim "Bobby" Beaver.
And! AND! Transmissions have finally reached the homeworld! They think you should be watching Supernatural too.
Here's hoping that the dearth of classic rock this season has been because they're planning to blow it all on this:
Houston is the place to get Lost
Has it come to this already? So soon? It seems like only yesterday that Jack was yelling that we HAD TO GO BAAAAAACK, and now another season of Lost draws to a close. The season finale airs next Wednesday, May 13. I strongly suggest you get yourself on down to the Alamo Drafthouse in Houston for what will be the finest viewing party this side of the Island. Tell Therese I sent you!

Supernatural 4.20 "The Rapture"

It's a Castiel episode this week! YAY!
Or ... is it?
Everyone's favorite perdition gripping angel is called back to Heaven (probably for "not" helping Dean in Monster at the End of This Book) and the boys meet his vessel. Jimmy.
Oh, Show. First the Prophet Chuck and now this.
Charles Beeson directed the episode written by Jeremy Carver.
And, bonus this week! Interviews with all three actors from Australian TV.
Oh, silly silly Misha. You had us at hello. Now, I will take a small issue with their blanket assertion that the fandom hates all female characters. A number of the guest stars have been well received - Haley and Jamie come to mind - and personally I would love to see them bring back CRD2 herself, Ona Grauer.
The fans just hate the female characters that suck.
*cough* Bella *cough*
Supernatural airs Thursday at 9:00 pm EDT on the CW

I review it : Crank 2 High Voltage
Crank 2: High Voltage is 96 minutes of "What the hell? No, seriously, what the hell did I just see? Hey, is that Cory Haim??"

We also got the preview for something called The Hangover with Will from Alias and Andy from The Office. The funniest bits are all probably in the trailer, but I'd be willing to pay cash money just for the scene with Iron Mike.

They should really just stop making movies altogether.
Because this is the greatest movie that has been, or ever will be made, in the history of the human race. Now, that is not to say that it isn't offensive, gratuitously violent, and demeaning and degrading to every man, woman, and inanimate object in it. Because it is.
And it is glorious.
10,000 volts of thumbs up!

Why do you ask?
Crank? More like crack. I am inexplicably excited for this movie. And! AND! It features the Bai Ling! Who had this to say about that little something special that she brings to the filum:All these weird things come to my mind. Everything I say is like strange - it doesn't make any sense to you, but in her character, when you hear her, it makes perfect sense.Yeah! Sure, the Bai Ling! Whatever you say!
Um, except this.
Bai said she hopes she'll return to Lost at some point. "They told me it's like the pyramids. Every character, every element is planned. I love that show."
Yeah, no. Just no. Although her previous turn on Lost also featured the simply fabulous Diana Scarwid. Who's character has never been seen or spoken of again. So I'll give you a pass, the Bai Ling, if you bring Diana with you. And leave the tattoo needles at home.

Have you gotten your tickets to the gun show?
Michelle Obama is many things. Bright, educated, professional, accomplished, poised, and charming. However, a good chunk of the news coverage about her often focuses on her looks and what she's wearing. Which is really annoying, and seems disrespectful. On the other hand, how do you not write about the heavy artillery that is Thunder and Lightening - The First Guns.

Woman was made to play guitar. Shout, Sister, Shout!

BAD. ASS.
Tharpe was a self-taught guitarist, and she strutted around a stage strumming windmills decades before Chuck Berry or Pete Townsend. Her 1945 crossover hit "Strange Things Happening Everyday" was later covered by Jerry Lee Lewis, and admired by Elvis Presley, Little Richard and Bob Dylan. In the pantheon of mod'ren music, I don't think it's a stretch to say she was the Hera to every rock god that came later.

This tastes like burning
It starts out innocently, as you apply smoothly and evenly to the lips. And then your nose is assaulted with the overpoweringly sticky sweet scent of vanilla. But wait. It gets worse. Oh so much worse ...
Because you make the mistake of pursing your lips together and OH SWEET GODS MAKE IT STOP. It actually tastes exactly like a slightly stale Peep, and not in a good way. Then you realize it's a little gritty, like there's a Peep in every application. You hold your mouth slightly open, maybe you're drooling a little bit by now, as you rush for a tissue, napkin, sand paper, anything to get the horrible goo off your lips. But the taste lingers ... oh, how it lingers.

NOT TO BE EATEN! I cannot stress that strongly enough.
Tip o'the hat to my fabulous friend Amy for the Peep balm hook up!

Peep this, yo
credit: Victoria Bernal from IT Flickr poolEaster swiftly approaches, and that means peeps contests. National Geographic Traveler's Intelligent Travel blog is putting their own twist on it:
Take a photo of one or more Peeps in any travel destination, add your photos to our Flickr pool, and then tag them "NGTpeeps." Please limit your entries to three per person. We'll select photos and feature them on our website and the lucky "peeps" will be featured in an online gallery next week.
The entry deadline has been extended to Monday, April 13. Visit Intelligent Travel for the poop. Or peep, as the case may be.
Oh! And there are prizes? Did I mention the prizes?
The good folks at Just Born, the Peeps parent company, have offered to provide some sugary prizes for the winners: Our grand prize winner will take home a Lenox China Peeps item, as well as a collection of Peeps candy, and our four runners-up will receive a suitcase - or perhaps a sweetcase - filled with items like Peeps luggage tags, plush Peeps, and more candy than you'll find in a typical Easter basket.

Passings: RIP Guiding Light 1937 - 2009
After 72 years, Guiding Light is switching off | Television | Chron.com - Houston ChronicleWhen the news broke on Wednesday, it gave me hope it was just a horrible, horrible April Fool's joke. But no. It's true. Venerable soap Guiding Light has been cancelled.
I don't think I'm being overly dramatic to say this show is like a part of my family. My mom grew up watching it with her mom. I grew up watching it with her. My brother has even admitted watching it with his daughter when she was home sick. I haven't been a serious watcher since high school, but I check in from time to time, on those occasions when I'm home during the day. And it is seriously the same actors and same stories. But there's something comforting in that sameness, and the continuity of 70+ years of accumulated story telling.
The last episode will air September 18, and they better make the most of the next few months. Just go crazy. Or as crazy as you can go when you've already had kidnappings, faked pregnancies, faked paternities, faked deaths, evil twins, amnesia, comas, maroonings, cross dressing serial killers, cloning, secret families, rock stardom, mind control, and carnies.
Now, every soap has their signature diva. Marlena = Days. Erica = AMC. Mrs. Chancellor = Y&R. The grand dame of GL is undoubtedly Charita Bauer, who played Bauer family matriarch Bert for 35 years.
But if you want diva, then you want Kim "Reva Shayne Lewis Lewis Spaulding Lewis Winslow Cooper Lewis Lewis O'Neill" Zimmer. And of course, the all time ALL TIME classic Reva moment is 1984's "Slut of Springfield" scene.
Farewell, gentle soap. You will be missed.

Supernatural 4.18 "The Monster at the End of this Book"
This week's episode sounds a little Heroes-ish ... except, you know. Good. Extra special love for referencing my #2 very most favorite book from childhood.
The best parts are when they cry. Heh. When Dean cries maybe, with his single perfect manly tear of pain. Sammy on the other hand? To say that he is a sloppy crier is an understatement. *cough* "No Rest for the Wicked" *cough*
In Castiel news, we already know Misha Collins has been upped to regular status for Season 5 (YAY!). io9 has some additional tidbits for this season:
Sam and Dean are shocked to discover a series of comic books titled "Supernatural" that accurately detail their lives as demon hunters. They track down the writer, Carver Edlund [hee] (guest star Rob Benedict), who explains he has visions of the brothers that he then turns into comic books."I'm full frontal in here dude."
Mike Rohl directed the episode written by Julie Siege.
And once again, the writers have been reading fanfic.

In Castiel news, we already know Misha Collins has been upped to regular status for Season 5 (YAY!). io9 has some additional tidbits for this season:We're most likely going to see Castiel flirting with the possibility of developing human emotion. In the meantime, towards the end of this season, we'll see Castiel get in a couple of fights where he either wins or holds his own. And we're going to meet the guy whose body Castiel possesses.Heavenly tax accountant for the win!
Supernatural airs Thursday at 9:00 pm (eastern) on the CW.

My little pony, my little pony
I was just a scouche too old to be interested in My Little Pony when they were introduced in 1983. But I am in LURVE with artist Mari Kasurinen's reimagining of the classic toy.
Let the Wookie win ... the interwebs! That grin is kind of terrifying, in the best possible way. And I don't have words to describe how much I love My Little Carbonite Block.
Now, I know that this is really My Little Leia Pony, but I would totally pretend that she was O-Ren Ishii. Oh, the epic battles of cuteness she and My Little Bride Pony could have! Just don't bring up the issue of her Palimino or Clydesdale heritage as a negative.

Or else she'll collect your effing head.
If the artist ever makes Serenity or Blade Runner inspired ponies, my head may explode from the awesomeness.
