In praise of parasols

Shiny!

While their methodology is suspect at best, the Weather Channel is not far wrong in naming D.C. one of the sixth hottest cities in the United States.

You don't have to tell me.  There's nothing like standing at the bus stop in the morning, hoping that salty tears and humid air will be enough to keep my flesh from bursting into flames.

But if there's one thing I learned from two winters in Chicago, it's that dignity and fashion have no place in extreme weather.  I finally took a page from my friend Irene, and embraced the parasol.  It's made all the difference.  Our great-great grandmothers so had it right.

Heat index of 102 you say?  Pshaw.
Easy like a Sunday morning

Still feeling awkward at the idea of popping open your umbrella when there's not a cloud in the sky?  It's okay.  You just need to start small and work up to it.

Future Fashion- Oh, Swish!

It's difficult to know what the future holds, and many predictions are just wildly off base. I'm still waiting for the flying car I was promised by Blade Runner. But the prognosticators behind this newsreel actually got quite a few things right.

Dresses made of transparent net? Big crazy hair? Check and check. Okay, maybe it's just JLo.

Cantilever heeled shoes. Why not?  Marc Jacobs agrees.

Electric belt adapting the body to climatic changes. Sort of.

Candy for cuties? Yes. You're wearing it.

Fabulous Etsy Find: cupcakesandmace

Ms. Constantine of Cupcakes and Mace is the creator of "laser cut acrylic jewellery for ass kicking girls".

I'd been thinking about ordering a name plate for a while, and then finally did.

First, the packaging. Ooh, pretteh!

Then, the necklace.  Woot!  Sweet!

Well,  let's see what she looks like ...

Kick ass!  An added bonus was the unsolicited compliment I got from a total stranger the first time I wore it.

Check our her etsy shop for pre made pendants, rings, bracelets, and earrings.  Custom pieces (like mine) are also available upon request.

Women who kick ass: Nobel Centenarian edition

I will be happy if I am only 1/4 as fabulous as Rita Levi Montalcini when I'm 1/2 her age.

I mean, come on.  Just deal with this picture a minute. This lady eats  awesometoast with fabulous jam every day.

British Friday - You Best Step Off My Girl Edition

My love for the Posh is well documented.  And now, word is that the Beckhams are planning to leave the U.S. and return to Europe.  Not quite two years after signing with the LA Galaxy, negotiations are underway for Becks to join AC Milan.

According to this Reuters article (via Yahoo!News), their departure is being greeted with a general yawn by the rest of Hollywood.
Household names in Britain and the rest of Europe, the Beckhams struggled to translate their appeal to star-heavy Los Angeles.  Victoria Beckham's passion for high heels and tight black dresses were at odds with LA's laid-back flip flops and sweatpants.

Bonnie Fuller, former editor of Us Weekly, said she loved Posh, 34, and her style, but felt the average American did not relate to the former "Spice Girls" singer.

"She didn't have enough hair," Fuller said of Victoria's Beckham's short mane, which she cropped further last year.

"American women are big hair girls. They want celebrities with long, sexy hair which they can aspire to. Posh is also superglam most days, all day, and American women relate much more to Jennifer Aniston or Angelina Jolie's uniform of jeans, T-shirts and sexy little sweaters."
You know what Bonnie Fuller?  You need to step the fuck off.  Seriously, I'm taking my earrings off.  I am not playing with you.

First of all?  Don't get me started on the hair thing.  Are you high?

Secondly, I personally don't want my stars to be Just Like Us.  I adore that Posh is completely over the top, and ultra glam (although she rocks the boyfriend jeans too), and is totally a character living out her own inner screenplay.   I don't want to relate to her.  I want to live vicariously through her absurd life and imagined conversations with Karl Lagerfeld.  I want to look at red carpet pho-toes of her and think, "Oh Posh.  You've done it again, you little minx".

Not, "She's wearing her dress backwards.  That's original.  I used to do that in high school."

I also love that she has both a sense of humour and self awareness.  She knows that her job is to be Victoria Beckham.  As she told Harpers Bazaar:
If I go to the supermarket looking like shit, that affects my work. I am selling an image.
Gods damn right!

So farewell Posh.  Float above the haters because they just don't matter.  You are MAH-JAH!

YES YES, PLEASE GODS, YES!!!!!

I don't watch Mad Men (because I don't have real cable), but I'm quite familiar with the show's look. I would be all over a line by Janie Bryant that translated the show's aesthetic into modern pieces.

Also? I would own this look.

Glamour: Can we expect to see a line of clothing come out of this, or a collection inspired by the show? What kinds of projects do you have going on for the future?

JB: I’m working on some things right now…I hate to be so mysterious but I can't really say! It would have my name attached to it though.

Demonic Short Pants

Supernatural is also sleepy night nights until January (KILLING ME!), but there are a few morsels to tide us over.  io9 has the deets on the first 4 stand-alone epis:

The brothers investigate a haunted house. Then they meet a trio of aging magicians (including one played by Barry Bostwick. [Can we have a "Dammit, Janet" joke, please??]) They investigate a ghost at their high school and we see flashbacks to the brothers, aged 14 and 18. And then a dangerous siren enthralls the boys and makes them turn on each other, allowing them to say some stuff they've been bottling up all season [Squeeee! Brotherly angst and fisticuffs!]. And in the longer run, Ruby pushes Sam to uses his supernatural powers, and Dean learns what the angels want from him. And it's not a good thing.
Hey, as long as Castiel is back on my teevee at the new year, I say its a very good thing.

Mo Ryan is on the Supernatural bandwagon big time this season, and has a teaser compilation from the first three epis up at the Watcher.

Wow.  My tv boyfriend Jensen Ackles in gym teacher shorts.  My eyes?

I'm going to try not to condemn the episode before I've even seen it, but I'm not feeling confident about After School Special.  Dean pegs a kid with the dodgeball?  Really new writers, really?  Did you not get the memo from Kripke that Dean isn't a dick?  No?  Well, here's what Dean and I have to say about that.
